Building Trades Tripartite Safety Leadership

Tripartite Safety Initiative

The "Tripartite Safety Leadership Initiative" at Shell Scotford is a partnership between the Alberta and National Building Trades; Shell Scotford and its Contractors to strengthen and deepen everyone's awareness of, and commitment to Shell's Safety program referred to as "Goal Zero".

The initiative was created based on the belief that to try to create a real culture change - a collaborative (tri-partite) effort was needed involving the leadership at Shell Scotford, their Contractors and all the Building Trades involved. A Tripartite steering group was formed and they developed a strategy focused on building this leadership as follows:

  • Invite senior Building Trades Leaders (Alberta-Canada-North America) to come to Scotford; meet with the Managers and contractors and "walk the plant" (The Leadership Team)
  • Hold a dialogue session with General Foreman\ Foremen\Job Stewards to obtain their ideas about the Leadership role of supervisors, GF\Foremen, how it influences safety and what could be done to make the biggest\a lasting difference to improve safety. This one day session would be hosted on a trade by trade basis, a session to be held every 3-4 months until all trades groups were engaged.
  • Create an action list of things that could be done to improve safety leadership and performance from the ideas shared at the sessions
  • Monitoring and communicating how well the initiative is doing and adapting and\or expanding it if appropriate.

A quarterly newsletter was launched in November 2011 to help keep everyone informed about how the initiative is doing.
